Green Bliaut and Matching Tunic

updated ?

A man and woman wearing medieval clothes

This bliaut is actually the first piece of garb I ever started working on. I got yards and yards of this beautiful iridescent synthetic fabric from my grandmother, and I chose the bliaut pattern featured on Lady Aíbell ingen Dairmata's website. I used Wright's Woven Band with Metallic 1-1/4" for the trim, which I got from Jo-Ann.

I am quite proud of how this garment ultimately turned out. I managed to get the math correct when cutting out the pieces to make the skirt a near perfect circle. There are 15 eyelets on the front left, 16 on the back left, 18 on the front right and 18 on the back right (67 total - all hand sewn).

I made a "Norman riding tunic" to match for my partner, Lord Vytautas Vilkas. On the left is a photo of us at our barony's Yule 2015. I was still sewing trim on one of the sleeves an hour into the event! In the evening the Baron and Baroness asked us to be Lord and Lady of Misrule, so we threw together a mock court which was quite fun. We called up one of the populace members to move an object 5 inches to the right, recognized someone as Wearer of the Tallest Hat, named a Commander of the Baronial Cat Army, appointed a Minister of Monkey Business, and to close we had a difference populace member move the aforementioned object 5 inches to the left.

In progress

Here you can see the gown mostly completed. These original sleeves were made by cutting separate pieces for the upper and lower sleeves, following the directions on Lady Aíbell ingen Dairmata's website. I ultimately decided to swap those sleeves out with new ones cut from a single piece.

Finished!

The (very wrinkly) bliaut, completed!

Circle skirt

I'm attempting to show here that the skirt is about a full circle.
